Could multiplayer potentially be a stretch goal? Even it was just LAN people could organize and play games through services like Evolve, Tunngle and Gameranger.

Sorry, as much as I personally love multiplayer it's just a huge, huge challenge in terms of time and expense, so it won't be a feature in At the Gates. Maybe future titles though. :)
